National Human Trafficking Awareness Month: Shedding Light on Key Facts In January, we recognized National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, shedding light on the following key facts: - An estimated 27.6 million people are currently victims of trafficking worldwide. - Boys represent the fastest-growing segment of identified human trafficking victims. - The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) provided increased protections for trafficking victims in the United States. - January 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, symbolized by wearing something blue in solidarity.

We emphasize the importance of fostering a community where survivors feel supported, empowered to speak out, and unafraid to report traffickers, ensuring they are held accountable.

Tragedy at the Border: Time for Change Sadly, January brought tragic news as a mother and her two daughters drowned while in pursuit of a better life. This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for a dignified asylum process, a reformed immigration system, and a unified approach between state and federal systems. Amidst this, the U.S. Supreme Court’s close decision to remove razor wire along the U.S.-Mexico border resulted in a dispute between federal and state governments. Refugees and migrants endure hardships, navigating hunger, harsh weather, and danger while attempting to pass through razor wire and icy rivers.

Governor’s Disturbing Statements Texas Governor’s alarming statement about not shooting people crossing the border raised concerns. Our Legal Director, Imelda Maynard, expressed deep disappointment and disgust, emphasizing that violence should never be the answer in the face of urgent humanitarian need.

Catholic border organizations, including our Executive Director Melissa Lopez, condemned extreme anti-immigrant policies, declaring that violence does not represent Texans. They reiterated the importance of welcoming the stranger and emphasized that human dignity should never be compromised.

Fee Increase Alert: Heads Up! The month concluded with an update from USCIS regarding application fees for certain immigration applications. Starting April 1, 2024, these fees will be increasing.
